Saturday May 17th 7pm $15adv/$18dos KELLY JOE PHELPS Soulful, Rootsy Songsmith
"The analytical side of this music links Delta blues with free jazz and jazz-folk, in compositions and arrangements as tied to the spacious melodicism of Joni Mitchell as to the well-grounded improvisations of blues masters like Mississippi Fred McDowell. The intuitive side contradicts all categories in performances that are never the same twice. Mr. Phelps may have growled and moaned like a postage-stamp bluesman in his performance last Wednesday, but his croon also invoked the light phrasing of Paul Simon; his playing may have echoed heroes like Bukka White, but it also rode on vapors of Bach and Mr. Phelps's fellow American experimentalist Bill Frisell. Mr. Phelps connects to the blues as poetry; his own lyrics, as in "River Rat Jimmy," the song that gave him the title to his latest album, "Shine Eyed Mister Zen," are highly metaphorical and as nonlinear as his playing. Performing the folk standard "Black Waterside," he focused on the fairy tale language, his airy playing conjuring a pocket of supernatural space. On gospel songs, he manipulated his fretboard to create eerie harmonics as he slipped from a mumble to a falsetto, as if to follow the soul beyond the physical realm..." -New York Times

Thursday June 5th 9pm $8adv/$10dos THE BRAKES and CARNEY Rock and Roll Co-Bill The Brakes are a genuine rock and roll band at first glance. However given a closer look, elements of folk, jazz and even post-rock reveal themselves, making their sound a distinct intertwining of American music, held together by insightful lyrics and memorable songs. Their musicality shines through as the members switch instruments, trading guitars, basses and keyboards for trumpets and saxophones. The band's success is evident in the range of acts that this band has shared the bill with: Dave Matthews Band to The Hold Steady, Live to Willie Nelson & John Fogerty. This past spring, their diverse talents were highlighted when the band took on dual city residencies, performing weekly in New York City and Philadelphia. Inhabiting The Knitting Factory in NYC every Tuesday and at Milkboy in Ardmore, PA every Thursday, the band effortlessly transitioned from famed NYC rock club to intimate listening room, often times re-arranging their songs for each different setting. Carney is a 4-piece Los Angeles musical phenomenon, who despite their young age (all 4 members are in their early 20’s), have years of musical experience behind them. Friday June 6th 7pm $15adv/$18dos ANGEL BAND A Truly Joyful Sound
Angel Band is the result of some of the best area musicians getting together to jam on a regular basis at a small cafe in Wilmington, Delaware. These weekly jams came together originally because David Bromberg wanted to explore the possibility of bringing live, creative music back to a downtown that had once been thriving musically. The expectation was modest, but the results weren't. Week after week, the players came from further and further away, until some of the area's finest musicians could be found sitting in on any given night. The simple fact that Angel Band grew out of this informal musical endeavor gave further endorsement to the idea that the best music comes naturally when great players gather. David's wife, Nancy Josephson, came to the jams occasionally and found the opportunity to sing whenever others might be there to join in. Eventually, accidentally, there was Angel Band, and as the players and the singers moved to and fro, Nancy began thinking about something more permanent. She felt that there was enough fun and spirit in the project to look a bit deeper for something that would continue to grow and evolve. So an effort was made to find singers and players that would commit to building a cohesive band over the long run. To that end, Jen Schonwald joined Angel Band in early 2006, followed by Kathleen Weber later in the year. As 2006 progressed, and the cohesion and stability that Nancy was looking for took hold, she began to devote more time to writing - and as a result, Angel Band has added several self-penned tunes to an ever-growing repertoire. Nancy and Bobby Tangrea are proving to be a very productive writing team when they're not writing individually and the band continues to produce new music at an accelerated pace. 2007 looks to be a period of exciting change as more and more of this new music finds its way into the live shows and onto a much anticipated second Angel Band CD, slated to begin recording in February. Look for Angel Band again to provide support on The David Bromberg Big Band reunion tours in February and November, as well as a full schedule of summer festival activity.
Saturday June 7th 9pm $20adv/$25dos RUSTIC OVERTONES Portland Rock Heroes
The band’s new music reflects not only the band’s newfound independence, but also their greater maturity. “We’ve always drawn from our experiences while writing our songs,” says Gutter. “It’s great to be back together and do that again. But we’ve also become better musicians and refined our own styles of writing and performing over these past five years, and we’d all heard each other’s work, which raised the bar a little for us all. There was more of a challenge, like, ‘I need to be as good as these guys have been.’ And there was a little more hunger again, going back to the days when we’d put everything in our lives aside and have three dollars a day to eat on, just so we could go on the road and play our music. Getting back to that feeling, with somewhat more developed taste and musicianship, has been really good.” Dave Gutter, lead vocals, guitar Spencer Albee, keyboards Dave Noyes, trombone Ryan Zoidis, alto sax Jason Ward, baritone sax Jon Roods, bass Tony McNaboe, drums
Thursday June 12th 9pm $5adv/$8dos ZACH DEPUTY Rootsy, soulful new age jam
CLICK FOR HIGH RES Hailing from the South Carolina coast, Zach Deputy has infused his earthy blues, roots-rock and soul with hip-hop beats, dance hall rhythms and a bit of the tropical humidity of Calypso and reggae. Maybe it is a natural result of living and performing along the Southeast’s beaches for the last four or five years, maybe it is a conscious desire to spice up the intuitive simplicity of his native, regional R&B with the exotic rhythms of the islands. It could even be Zach’s family roots in Puerto Rico and St. Croix. Either way, the result is an original sound as comfortable and accessible as worn flip-flops, open and inviting like a seaside cabana and full of flavor surprises like a New Orleans gumbo. "A lot of bands come through here, and rarely do they get the response that Zach Deputy received from our staff and from the people who came to see the other bands on the bill." -Howie Schnee, Sullivan Hall / CEG Music (New York, NY

Richie Havens is gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. His fiery, poignant, always soulful singing style has remained unique and ageless since he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960’s. It’s a voice that has inspired and electrified audiences from the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in 1969, to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 -coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration, "A Day In The Garden", in 1999. For over three decades, Richie has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With more than twenty-five albums released and a touring schedule that would kill many a younger man, he continues to view his calling as a higher one. As he told The Denver Post, "I really sing songs that move me. I’m not in show business, I’m in the communications business. That’s what it’s about for me".

Sunday June 15th $10 adv/$12 day of MEG HUTCHINSON with Natalia Zuckerman Bring Dad on up for Two Rising Singer Songwriters
Meb Hutchinson Lyric-based, contemporary acoustic songwriter. Influences include poet Mary Oliver, songwriter Shawn Colvin, word slinger Greg Brown and mood maker David Gray. Originally from rural western-most Massachusetts, Hutchinson now lives in the Boston area. Although only 29, she has already won numerous songwriting awards in the US, Ireland and UK, including recognition from prestigious competitions at Merlefest, NewSong, Kerrville, Falcon Ridge, Telluride and Rocky Mountain Folks Fests. She recently signed with Red House Records for the March 4th release of her new album "Come Up Full." About "Come Up Full" Hutchinson’s new CD of original songs confirms that she is one of the great voices of the next generation of acoustic musicians. Come Up Full is a lyrically rich record about encountering good things when you least expect them. Amidst war, loss and heartbreak, Hutchinson’s songs hold the promise of love, hope and homecomings. In songs like “Ready,” “Home” and “Come Up Full” she sings about our universal ability to overcome life’s most trying times. With a poet’s sensibility, Hutchinson’s songs are laced with a weathered but unselfconscious optimism, a love of language and of the natural world. An honest writer, Hutchinson does not shy away from the hard topics. In “America (Enough),” she explores American culture, excess and war by writing about how things taken to an extreme almost become their opposite. Another timely song on the new album is her “Song for Jeffrey Lucey,” based on the real story of Lance Corporal Jeffrey Lucey, who returned from Iraq, suffering from severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “I heard about Jeffrey Lucey and was devastated by his story but incredibly moved by how his family spoke out about PTSD,” Hutchinson says. “I think we all need to recognize sorrow, both the grief of a country at war and our own very private sorrows, in order to get through them.” Whether tackling political issues or matters of the heart, Hutchinson does exactly that—recognizes the pain that gives our lives a greater depth and a deeper appreciation of joy. She writes about human resilience and maintains that no matter what happens in our lives, our nets can still come up full. Natalia Zuckerman Natalia Zukerman’s Weasel Records debut Brand New Frame introduces listeners to her rich layers of top notch guitar playing, contemporary beats and dark, sweet, provocative vocals. Musically sophisticated, intimate and irreverent all at once, this record highlights what’s best about Americana music and offers it a Brand New Frame. It is an album about change. In Brand New Frame, Zukerman challenges listeners to break out of patterns and rhythms that hold them back from reaching the truth. The title track, “Brand New Frame” is a wake up call to those who tell the same stories over and over again to anyone who will listen. “Better Me” presents the idea that the people we are striving to be are there all along, waiting for us to catch up to what we already know we are capable of. “Only Trees” is a metaphor for what Zukerman’s album is all about – that things change: landscapes, ideas, music. In the song she recognizes the way we live our modern lives at breakneck speed, and invites us to slow down.

And when those ’bones start ripping into Hendrix and Led Zeppelin licks, all stylistic bets are off. Even in a city that doesn't play by the rules, New Orleans’ Bonerama is something different. They're not a traditional brass band, but they've got brass to spare-even with no trumpets or saxes in sight. They can evoke vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation in the same set; maybe even the same song. Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone, hailed as “the ultimate in brass balls” (2005) and praised for their "…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls" (2007). As cofounder Mark Mullins puts it, "We thought we could expand what a New Orleans brass band could do. Bands like Dirty Dozen started the ’anything goes' concept, bringing in the guitars and the drumkit and using the sousaphone like a bass guitar. We thought we could push things a little further." ............................................................................................

he long and winding roots of the GFE crew stretch back through time and space to the sandy woods of Ocala Florida during a 1994 regional Rainbow Gathering. For those of you who don't know, the Rainbow Family of Living Light is a massive tribe of people spanning the entire globe, taking over slowly. They come together for month long celebrations in national forests and are attended by anywhere from 15 to 25,000 Earth dwellers. Food is free, rent is unheard of, music and entertainment are abundant, and the psychedelic journeys are the best ever. For more information about the largest non-organization in the world, visit www.welcomehome.org. That 1994 gathering in Ocala was the birth place of the Granola Funk Express vegan kitchen and theatre. There were road dogs and rookies, granolas and gutter punks, couch-surfers and krishnas all working together preparing delicacies, writing songs and skits, all while dancing to the ever present drums, the funk heart beat, the 'boom boom crack'. The Funk tribe continued forest hopping in various manifestations and one year later, returned to the Ocala regional in 1995. By that time, the tribe was stronger, the kitchen and theatre more evolved, and the music more advanced to where heads were now commonly freestyling and creating improvisational poetry on the spot, off the top, to that 'boom boom clack', that just don't stop.

On the roller coaster of his career so far, John Eddie has had enough big breaks, hard luck, new beginnings, false starts, serious adventure and big fun to inspire a boxed set's worth of country songs. He's had the sort of life - often hard-scrabble, occasionally charmed -- that other artists only imagine, or have someone else write about for them. John has managed to document a lot of this on Who The Hell Is John Eddie?, his debut disc for Lost Highway, along with details of assorted dreams, wishes, romances, and regrets. He really has spent endless days and nights on the road, playing the "shit-hole bars" he so hilariously and accurately recalls. And he's endured the heckling of alcohol-fueled patrons wanting to hear Skynyrd and Petty and demanding to know, Who The Hell Is John Eddie?.

Akrobatik’s varsity rhyme career hatched in 1998, when his first single, "Ruff Enuff," dropped on Boston’s Detonator Records, which was also home to Outsidaz franchise Pacewon, Bronx alt-hop legend C-Rayz Walz and Stronghold ace Breeze Evahflowin.
